GORE-TEX GR®gaskets with metal
reinforcement-enhanced sealing performance in low stress and high thermal cycling applications.
Superior sealing performance and blowout resistance
GORE-TEX GR®sheet gasketing with metal reinforcement is made
from 100% expanded PTFE with a corrugated metallic insert that changes sealing performance in low stress and high thermal cycling applications. The unique corrugated metal disc provides "memory", or resiliency and reduces the stress to seal. Similar to a spring under compression, this "memory" also ensures a tight seal, even during wide stress variations that occur under extreme temperature and pressure cycling conditions. This gasket exhibits the same superior creep resistance and tightness characteristics as all members of the GORE-TEX GR sheet gasketing family.
Construction flexibility
Sandwiched between layers of strong, conformable GORE-TEX GR sheet gasketing, the metallic insert is available in a wide variety of metals. Since the basic sandwich construction is not intended to completely isolate the core from process fluids, the metal should be selected on the basis of its compatibility with these fluids.
The blowout temperature of GORE-TEX GR®gaskets with metal at three different pressures. (Testing performed by TTRL as part of an exploratory test program.) Note that in all cases, the failure temperature is well above that of other PTFE alternatives.
High level of tightness
Independent tests were conducted by The University of Montreal Tightness Testing & Research Laboratory (TTRL) to confirm both tightness and enhanced blowout resistance. The product exhibits a high level of tightness, even during extreme stress cycling, with a maximum tightness capability greater than 37,000 Tp.
Tightness levels
| Tp @ 1,000 psi (7 MPa) stress |
> 100 |
| Tp @ 3,000 psi (21 MPa) stress |
> 6,000 |
| Tp @ 5,000 psi (35 MPa) stress |
> 10,000 |
| Tp @ 7,500 psi (51 MPa) stress |
> 20,000 |
| Tp @ 10,000 psi (69 MPa) stress |
> 30,000 |
Tightness parameter (Tp) is inversely proportional to leak rate. High values of Tp indicate low leak rates - a 10-fold increase in Tp corresponds to a 100-fold decrease in leak rate.
Gasket factor: Gb = 238 psi / a = 0.229 / Gs = 6.5 x 107 psi (PVRC definitions) (Tp, as defined by the PVRC, is the pressure (in atmospheres) required to create a 1 mg/sec helium leak in a standard NPS 4" (101.6 mm) diameter gasket.)
